Honoring the crown, preserving the culture
means caring for our roots — not just our hair, but our history, identity, and legacy. That’s where my purpose meets my power.

Vanita McClendon
Vanita “V” McClendon is a master natural hair care specialist and Loctician with over 30 years of experience. She began her professional journey in 1995 at NAPPS, a pioneering natural hair salon and beloved St. Louis institution. NAPPS was the first of its kind in the region, and V remained there until 2001 in honor of its founder, Mekaht, who was instrumental in paving the way for natural hair care locally.
A proud advocate of African heritage and cultural expression, V has built a career rooted in community, education, and empowerment. Her skills extend beyond hair. She’s also an accomplished makeup artist, having worked on music video productions for rapper Nelly and the St. Lunatics, including “Midwest Swing” and “King of This City.”
V offers a full range of natural hair services, including micro locs, two-strand twists, loc coloring, extensions, repairs, and holistic natural hair care. She founded her salon, Knotty by Nature, nearly two decades ago. Today, her new space, located at 2608 N. 14th Street in historic Old St. Louis, serves as both a salon and a hub for community education.
Dedicated to preserving and passing on the art of natural hair care, V has mentored countless aspiring stylists. Through her blog, “Nappy Thoughts,” she provided guidance for those transitioning to natural hair, along with tips for maintaining healthy styles. Her educational workshops include Mommy/Daddy Hair Classes, Loctician Training, Loc Extension Creation, Coloring Techniques, Braiding, and more — all designed to empower clients and professionals alike.
Vanita McClendon continues to uplift her community by sharing her deep knowledge, nurturing spirit, and unwavering passion for the natural crown.
